Chapter 13

Buckwheat and blueberry. Saturday morning pancakes with Dad, Marco and her had been a tradition for as long as Stormy could remember, however it was already ten a.m. and there was no sign of Marco.

“I don’t know where he is, Dad. I’ve sent him a couple of texts, and tried calling, but it doesn’t ring. Just goes straight to voice mail.” Stormy took a deep breath. “Maybe I should take a walk by his house and see what’s up.”

“Okay, kiddo, but you might need to give him some space,” said Dad. “Telling him about your vampire background is one thing, but for him to see it in person is something entirely different. It could take Marco some time to understand it all, but I’m sure he’ll come around. After all, you two have a lot of history together.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right. I’ve just never seen him like this before.”

“Well, he can say the same about you too, right?”

“Ha, yeah, I guess you’re right, Dad.” Stormy smiled as she ate the last bite of her powdered sugar and syrup-coated pancake.

After eating her breakfast and mulling it over for a while longer, Stormy finally decided to just go ahead and check in on Marco.

She was greeted by his parents in the front yard.

“The flowers are looking good, Mister and Missus Ramirez,” she said.

“Thanks, Stormy. How’s your dad?” Mr. Ramirez asked.

“Oh, he’s doing good. Same old thing, ya’ know. Is Marco here?”

“Yes, he’s upstairs in his room, but he said he doesn’t want to be bothered,” his mom said.

Stormy started to turn and walk away. No, Marco isn’t getting away with this that easily. She turned back to his parents, still working in the yard. A part of her felt a bit guilty for what she was about to do; but not too guilty. After all, she needed to see Marco—and what good was being part vamp if you couldn’t use your powers now and then?

“I think Marco wants to see me,” Stormy said in her calming voice.

Marco’s parents eyes glazed over. “Yes, we think Marco wants to see you,” they both repeated.

“I’ll show myself in.” Stormy walked past Marco’s parents.

“Yes, please show yourself in and have a lovely day,” both parents replied.

Stormy walked into the house then headed up the stairs and straight to the door of Marco’s room. She knocked.

“Yeah?” Marco called from behind the door.

She opened the door and walked in.

“What the…?!” Marco lunged across his computer desk to grab a discarded t-shirt to cover up with. “How’d you get in here? I told my parents I didn’t want to be bothered by anyone today.”

“Gee, what’s with the attitude?” Stormy asked.

“Sorry…” Marco fumbled with the arm holes of his shirt. “It’s just that...well, I need some time to think.”

“About what?”

“What else? About all this stuff. This super-human, half-human, half vampire stuff, okay?!?!”

“Oh.” Stormy looked down at her shoes.

“I mean, on one hand it’s really cool to have a best friend that can take on ghosts and stuff,” Marco explained, “but, on the other hand.
